Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
 
Glendale Adventist Academy integrates technology into the classroom with the goal of empowering young learners in a digital age. Our BYOD initiative facilitates an increasingly digital curriculum, enhancing differentiated learning through the use of personal devices with which students are already familiar. While having a device is highly recommended, it is not required.
 
Does my child need to have his/her own device?
No. The BYOD initiative, while recommended, is completely optional. Students are not required to have a personal device. For courses that make use of such devices, the school is able to loan a device to the student during the class period.
 
To which grade levels does this apply?
The BYOD initiative applies for grades 5-12, though at the discretion of individual teachers. Contact your child's teacher for more information about the use of personal devices in your child's classroom.
 
What are the minimum recommended specifications for personal devices?
  • ChromeOS (still within Chromebook AUE Policy support), Mac OS 11 (Big Sur) or higher, Windows 10
  • Minimum 6-hour battery life
  • Internet connectivity, Wi-Fi (provided by the school) or mobile data
  • Anti-virus protection for Mac OS and Windows (Malwarebytes, Avast, AVG, etc.)
  • Screen resolution of 1366x768 or higher
  • Screen size of 11.6" or larger
  • Chrome web browser
  • Keyboard
What device does the school recommend?
Are there any software requirements?
The only software necessary is the Google Chrome web browser. The school provides each student with a Google Workspace for Education account, which includes online office productivity functionality (word processing, spreadsheets, etc.). Use of other productivity software (Microsoft Office, iWork, LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Corel, etc.) is discouraged due to file compatibility issues between platforms.
 
What about tablets, such as Android tablets or iPads?
We do not recommend the use of Android tablets or iPads. Windows tablets with Windows 10 are acceptable if they have a keyboard.
 
Does the school provide support for personal devices?
Limited support is available for connecting personal devices to the wireless network.
 
Will my child's device be safe on the school's network?
The school actively works to maintain a secure computing environment; however, because of the nature of BYOD, the school cannot guarantee that the network will always be secure. Here are some tips to help secure your child's computer against local network threats:
  • Enable the computer's firewall
  • Disable automatic logins
  • Never share usernames and passwords with anyone
